firstly use either a 'astro tube' type of rope cleaner or some good gloves to force as much of the milk as u can off the end (which should be taped & cut NOT heat sealed) then find a tree as close to 1/2 the height of the length of youre rope, set up a seperate asention rig/ system on its own line, asend to the top, tie a prussic on your velocity, clip in & absail down. Repeat as many times as is nessisry cutting off the hollow milk & re taping the end.

Hockling and milking are two different things, milking is where the cover stretches and you get a bit of empty cover appearing at the end of the rope.

 

If your having trouble coiling it up, it sounds like the rope is hockling, where it gets lots of kinks and twists in it. You need to run it through a figure 8 and push all the twists out to one end of the line.

When at the end of the climb you come down to the ground and go to put your rope away, pull the whole thing back through the tree. I.e, if you had a t.i.p 50' up, using 140' rope, when you come down you will have 50' of rope betweeen your harness and your t.i.p, 50' coming down to the rest coiled/ lying on the ground. Pull all 95' through the tree, this will help keep your rope de-tangled, i.e not hockling.

thanku guys very gratefull for all comments!! hockling is something i havnt heard of and think that this is my problem as i have tried milking the sheath over the core but never seem to pull much through. The problem of it twisting and coiling still pesists. i will give it a go

i find for all your milking needs on any climbing line the best way to milk your rope is just to use it. it'll milk slowly over time and use and save you going out your way to milk it.

 

Pay attention to the tail of the rope and as excess milks off tape and cut,

 

Like has been said before Samson ropes tend not to milk much, Yale tends to milk, i've been told Marlow milk badly
