Safety - say it like it is...

just ordered some pizza for us before the main event - the crocodiles v LA H&S enforcement team....

So the question to the bad boys out there is.... where are you getting all this duff info from:stupido2: ? Who said anything about forms? I said smartphones. Who said anything about stopping work - I hope proper OSH will get you more!

Put it this way; if you go all dry in the mouth and start sweating when the spec docs arrive because there is a section on H&S where do you turn for advice?

If the answer is 'my mate' then fine. If the answer is; 'I pray and smudge the ink' then fine. If the answer is 'we outsource' or 'I use the HSE website (because it is free)' then fine. I just want to know where you get your advice - simples!!

Mind you it has been a bit of an afternoon of 'Carry on up the Arboretum' so thanks for the entertainment.:congrats:...

I still make it that the 'Fellers (get it) are cutting through the OSH'ers. at a rate of :thumbdown:7 - 5:thumbup1:

Arb work is almost entirely a service industry though.

By "Arb work" I assume you actually mean "tree surgery" which is indeed a service industry.

Arboriculture is much more diverse however so it would be incorrect to assume that everyone who feels they have a place on an arboriculture forum or indeed can label themselves as an arboriculturalist is a tree surgeon.

I am definately an arboriculturalist (admittedly part time) but I'm not a tree surgeon and there are quite a few others who could probably say the same.

but every question deserves and answer;

Safety management systems are not only recognised they are required by law from any employer. They can be very simple to produce. So no, it does not cost a lot and most of it is probably there already. What is missing is usually free. You pay for someone (hopefully who knows what they are doing) to come in, prune the paperwork to a good shape, get rid of dead or diseased rubbish and plant new stuff knowing it will yield returns and healthy stock. If you didn't the paperwork you have might have an infestation called liability or a parasite called apathy.

.... and the bit about Welshland, this could be tricky as there are significant cultural barriers to be overcome. It should be ok for some, especially dim ond y rhai sy'n gallu meddwl tu allan i'r bocs

Never a good idea to assume.

Generally best to ask

For instance, what (in you opinion) is the occupational role of a part time aboriculturist?

Do companies have an option though?

No one wants to employ an apprentice for 4 years any more.

No one wants to be an apprentice for 4 years anymore either.

Employers expect staff to magically appear from university with exactly the skills they need.

Youngsters want to drift in and out of jobs as the mood takes them (as long as it doesn't affect their social life)

Organisations want to hire contractors on short term contracts and then tell them to sling off.

Its not 'Health and Safety' that's at fault here - its how more a case of how modern business chooses to work

Your post has opened my eyes a bit as to why we have to create so much paperwork on large sites. They tar everyone with the same brush. Smaller customers know that I have been in the generator industry 30 years and trust my reputation and experience to get the job right first time.

As someone said its down to money. Most of these larger out fits expect you to produce reams of job specific Rams at no cost to them. They have to legislate to the thickest man on site.

I was begining to think I was a dinosaur now I know I am

I know lots of really good engineers my age that have had enough using brain and brawn for little extra reward and they now deliver dot com groceries

A highly trained, qualified, competent and well equipped tree surveyor is certainly NOT a 'tree surgeon'..... Still pretty service industry-esq though IMO.

Knock those who work in Service industries and call 'em parasites, and you risk insulting a large chunk of the users of this forum IMO.
