Hydraulic oil Vs. Automatic transmission fluid

Alright lads,

 

I need some replacement hydraulic oil for the Carlton Stump grinder, which is originally filled with Citgo AW32.

 

I'm getting some automatic transmission fluid to top up the log splitter reservoir, so my question is, can I use the same oil for the grinder or is there a big difference? What's your take on this?

Ive put hudraulic oil in car power steering reservoirs a fair few times, no problems

Atf to dexron III spec is 34 viscosity, so not much difference there.

However hydraulic oil does contain a lot important detergents and chemicals, anti foam, anti knock, different heat dissipation characteristics.

For what its worth i would stick with what the book says. Aw, iso or hv vg 32 is pretty easy to come by and fairly cheap, but just beware, as with all oils, you get what you pay for.

ATF can have a higher seal swell rating also.
