that being said, if i had to cut a 30" say beech or oak at double bar length, i would not want to do it with a 40cc saw , id be looking 60cc at least for grunt and speed

sorry to confuse op

 

 

I have, it's slow and involves carrying a combi can constantly! Although I'd only ever do that again if I had to, and only soft wood!

I'd go 1.5x bar length if you're a novice, double bar length can be tricky if you've underestimated the diameter. Likewise, you'll need a suitable sized saw, so you're looking 35cc and up for a 14" or larger bar. It's possible to do over double with a bar, but when cutting without experience, it's quite easy to sever a hinge, create a poor gob by under and over cutting, or end up below the hinge as you bring the saw round.

 

Thanks for that Eddy. I had assumed as a novice I would need a bar the same length as the diameter I was felling. Even with that a 12" bar would cover over 90% of my felling, so 1.5x would give 18" which would cover virtually everything.

Until I get some more woodland of course.:001_cool:
