I didn't say it ment you did good work or bad did I? If your in business why not be reg? Everything you buy has vat on it so why not join the club????? Not made any difference to my domestic work, some moan but so what you can't please everyone. If you read my post properly and thought about it instead of jumping in feet first you would understand. Reduce vat to 10% but the threshold to say 20k that means all legit traders are in the same boat, those of no fixed abode wouldn't be so would stick out a mile and all business world compete on an equal footing.

totally agree VAT registered means nought - I know a lot of crooks who are registered :sneaky2:

I was registered for over 25 years - started at 8% now its 20% greedy government yet again screwing us, all you are is a unpaid tax collector.

It was no big deal for me with my commercial work, but when it hit 20% it killed my domestic business.

It means your turning over a certain amount of money and as one customer told me as I told him it was plus vat "well it shows your good at your trade" his words not mine and no just before anyone jumps down my neck and had a hissy fit, you dont have too be vat reg to be good but it just shows you can't please everyone.

the dids probably say they are vat registered and get 20% more cash!!

Ask for a vat number first.

My plumber Is vat reg, don't mind one bit, he is good at his job,is fair and supplies an invoice showing vat......that's life.

do you have to earn a certain amount to get registered?

I bet if I offered to charge it even when under the threshold, hmrc would not object, would they?

It probably wouldn't have killed it if all business was reg would it,see what I'm talking about a level playing field.

my customers don't ask to see my insurance or tickets, I don't think checking a vat number would be top of their list.

I don't have to charge vat, and are therefore 20% cheaper. that's life..

That's not entirely true, you may not have the crew to bosh a job as quick as the VAT reg company you priced against, you put a day on the job they may do it in half a day so they can be cheaper, of course this can work both ways. I have always been against going VAT reg but I now have no choice, looking at my overheads and what I can claim back I won't have to pass 20% onto my customers anyway.
