agreed, cable for heavy duty winching. Say where you are, no doubt a member will have a short length of retired rigging or climbing line that would do the job for this tree

Bit far for a length of free rope as I am in South Yorkshire. Have a look on fr jones they do rope by the metre. The stuff I use is the cheapest 16mm 3strand/ hawser laid it's under a pound a metre easy to splice and work with. Also cheap enough to change regularly and i find that you get much better traction on three core as opposed to modern kern mantle stuff. Others may disagree as it runs rough compared to modern stuff but for your purposes is just the job I reckon.

assuming the bank that is on the left is of reasnoble height you should be able to cut off at the top end thus putting it on the floor - no need for winch etc.

Thanks for that, went for another look. It's fairly firmly wedged. To cut I would have to reach around the tree in which it is wedged. Possible for an experienced user I would think.

I would just cut it up where it is and stack it on the side for now.

are you doing this for the challenge or because it poses a risk? otherwise id just leave it for the valuable 'standing' deadwood it is and go and cut something easy?!?!?!?!?!?
