I'm a gardener and in one of my estates I've recently taken on has two hornbeams and I don't know what's wrong with them, could anyone help me out

My main concern it's next to a huge apple orchard and wondered if it would be infectious to them

The basal picture highlights the need to remove soil etc. from the stem area, remove any dead tissue from the stem, and examine the soil/tree interface. Conjecture without diagnosis is very limited, and conclusions are impossible.
