Dont think he endeared himself with the copper, as he spent at least half an hour trying to argue that the lights never changed. In the end we had 2 police cars on site, they checked the lights were all working correctly and that we had everything in order. Of course, we did, and he was in the wrong!!

Err which version of the Highway Code did you read Matt! There is no difference between a temporary red light, and a fixed red light. They both mean STOP!

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/Signsandmarkings/index.htm As you well know the lights are used for the workers safety, and to have some irresponsible moron jeopardising the workforce, simply because he cant wait a couple of minutes, is inexcusable. Would he have felt a right **** if the climber had dropped a limb on his car because he couldnt wait? No he'd have tried to sue us. So tough doo-doo on him and his kind.
