An increasingly important consideration for managing tree stocks and a refreshing change from the "fungal induced hazards" approach...albeit dependent upon location and targets etc. etc.

I was cutting up a big mountain ash (Sorbus) recently that was felled in the winter storm. Had a lot of heart rot. Suddenly getting blue saw dust!! I stopped and realised it was shredded poly rope that had been used by a greater spotted woodpecker for its nest. I was a long way from the entrance. Really sad to see it having lost its nest site. Next slice in I hit the bees nest and had to run!

Put a couple of woodpecker nest boxes up on adjacent trees but it won't be the same for it.

Phellinus ignarius white rot, making this willow easy pickings for what ever avaians have decided to set up home in.

Laetiporous sulphureus at play in this oak volume, enabling tits, squirrels & parakeets to take up residency at various times.

 

Bats as well probably, but nothing at home currently.

Gorgeous display of tree adaptation to fungal colonisation: Good woundwood growth on the top of that large pruning wound, and sprouting below the 'infection', all strongly indicating compartmentalisation, and tolerance of the habitat created by Laetiporus.

In any location, with any people and property around, the tree's response is a force not to be denied!

Interesting discovery.

 

Red oak with long term Laetiporus sulphureus colonisation.

 

Whilst assessing a recently detached limb from this tree (socket failure due to brown rot) we heard this little chap tapping away above.

 

Normally I associate woodpecker activity on white rot decayed branches not brown rot like the below example.
