Where to start - Tree mapping for surveys

Hello chaps,

I am getting more and more requests to provide tree surveys. I generally follow BS5837 when recording data (here on the Isle of Man we aren't required to follow any BS) but my maps vary from hand drawn crosses and squiggles on standard boundary maps or boundary maps scanned and then edited in word processing apps or even good old hand drawn maps, but I see (what I'm guessing are) CAD maps that display crown dimensions etc. and would like to know where to start with all of that. Is there a good entry level arb software to start making good maps or do I jump straight into CAD software?

Thoughts and suggestions very welcome.

Cheers.

Or you could try something powerful and free like QGIS. Lots of online based support and training to get you started.

I'll be honest and say that you wont get better from a freeware in terms of analysis and functionality, but it just depends on how savvy you are and how far you want to take it.

Just be aware though BS5837 is not applicable or even useful in all situations. PM me if you want more information.
