Chalara fraxinea?

This appeared to be very healthy last year, I've not seen chalara in the flesh before, am I completely wrong or is it possibly the case?

Possibly, particularly if you're in Kent / SE region, but Ash was quite late this year and burst quite sporadically in many cases. Try ro get a close up looking for the lesions on young twigs as per FC website.

 

Time for the 'lizard' approach I would suggest....i.e. monitor!

Jimmay, take a look at the attached and download the larger map. No confirmed 'wider environment' findings in that area of Devon...yet!

There are dozens of ash trees in SE Wales that look like the ones in your pictures,some have no leaves at all.

I first noticed some partial defoliation in the dry spell of last summer and even more Ash are leafless or partially leaved with just the brown keys hanging down this year.I have looked at several close up and none are showing any classic signs of die back as shown on the net.

The reason for the appearance of this tree and probably the ones you mention in SE Wales is due to the massive energy input into last years heavy mast year. There are uninfected Ash all over looking like this, it's happened in previous years but I suppose there just under closer observation these days.
