Big tree (well big for us) moving/planting

Hello peeps

Just got back from looking at a great job.

A client wants an established 20ft conifer moving and re-planting, it's about 6 inches at the base. I'd love to do it bit of a change and all!!

So any suggestions on good anchorage systems for when we replant.

Should we go and cut the roots ready for moving next year??

Anyone done stuff like this in the past??

i always dig around the base with a sharp spade, never a year in advance though, max 2 months. if the ground is crap and dry the roots will be deep, if you can remove some of the lower branches so to get in about it, saves breaking them later on. i ripped out 6 last year with the roof mount, ruff as hell just to clear a garden. stuck them in the ground with no care what so ever up the farm just to see what happened. all but one survived, and it was the one that came out the easiest and was in the best condition. i find replanting a hit or a miss. best thing is a machine(or tree spade)and get as much root as possible. usually you can buy a new tree, for less money than labour will cost(usually a tenner a foot). and guaranteed to grow

I have moved conifers of that size, the single most important thing is the aftercare.

 

I always put a coil of perforated pipe in the new planting hole, underneath the rootball, so that when you water it the water doesnt just sit on the surface.

 

The rootball is likely to be pretty heavy, have you got machinery for moving it?

 

When next year are you doing the moving?

 

With regard to staking, I have always guyed, but your client may not want visible support, in which case you'll need to look at some sort of rootball strapping system.
