pto mower

I am looking to buy a new (to me!) grass cutter for behind my tractor, im looking for something 8 or 9 foot wide, mainly for cutting fields that dont realy get used for anything so can be between 6 and 24 inches long and fairly rough. What sort of mower would people recomend, topper, drum or another kind? Needs to be robust, easy to maintain and produce a decent-ish finish.

Thanks, william:thumbup1:

Depending on your budget and tractor size, a good flail would be ideal but they aren't cheap and a lot of them require 1000 pto which some older tractors havnt got. You don't really want a drum mower as it will leave big swaths of grass that havn't been chopped up. Also a lot of them are only 5'6"/6'6" which is a bit narrow, having said that if its level you can get on with them but if its rough you will forever be knocking the breakback out which is a pain. A good spearhead or mconnell rotary would be another good option or teagle, I have got a bomford tri blade 3000 which is quite good but very heavy, having said that it puts up with some grief. Beware of a lot of cheap toppers with rubbish gearboxes that cost a fortune to replace. Theres loads out there so pick one that suits

try a grass topper like a abbey, on 3 point linkage or trailed, they have 2 arms with 2 blades on each, some have 3 arms, the blades is free swinging, they do chop the grass abit and spread it out the back,

i used to do grass topping with the abbey behind a mf 290 2wd, it worked find,, used 2 top on a hill sheep farm, used to get alone of a 4wd tractor for the higher ground, some of the ground hadnt been cut in years, some of the rashes was 3ft high, the grass topper cut it ok, just had to take your time tho, always on the lookout for rocks,,
