very intersting Paul

Not overly confident that it is G pfeifferi, but I can see why you've gone that way.

Personally not seen G pfeifferi fruiting on Pear and the Fungal Record Data Base has it almost exclusively on Beech across its 288 records with 7 on Oak, 1 on Willow & 1 on Lime.

How accurate these records are is open to debate I guess.

Can you take a wedge slice showing the flesh & tubes ?

whats going on with the bark plates to the side & above the bracket?

Older attachement point of a bigger bracket perhaps?

Thanks David. Yes, I assumed that the discolouration on the bark above was from the site of a previous bracket that has been knocked off.

Unfortunately I can't take a slice as the tree is not local to me (I must start carrying a sharp knife in my survey kit bag).

I did also wonder if it could be a Phellinus species as it's on Rosaceae?

Have you seen it on Pear before then Tony?

Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

seen australe on most things, even conifers like larch and applanatum also.

|For what it's worth (not very much, probably) I thought is was an arrested Phellinus pomaceus.

That is also a distinct possibility but would expect it to have a more slanted pore layer:thumbup1:
