I have a stihl fs460 and have the optional shredding kit, I used it for the first time last week on some brambles and it is amazing!

 

I don't know why people don't like the 4mix engines, I have found mine to be very good but I suppose time will tell?

 

Low speed power is fine on my machine.

FS460 is a 2-mix engine. Low speed power is where it's at with a nice big machine like that, and power in reserve for heavy stuff.

 

Many on this thread (and I think the OP) are confusing Stihl 4-mix technology (valves on a 2-stroke, which are crap) with a true 4-stroke engine as used in Honda strimmers.

A 2-mix FS-70 is £70 less than a 4-mix FS90, but the same power.

 

The FS-70 engine is great, but it's a flexi driveshaft.

 

I'd be tempted by the Echo TCD posted- £30 more but a solid driveshaft. Quite a bit heavier, but also quite a bit better vibration figures. Throw in a 2-year commercial warranty and that looks very attractive.

2-mix , solid shaft , ecospeed(half throttle for blade work)and under £300 with the VAT.

I'm in Bristol. From what I've read, not too keen on 2 stroke, like to reduce emissions and noise.

Stihl 4-mix is alright if you use the green oils. But yeah it's not good for a brushcutter better for hedgetrimming.

ive just upgraded from a donated stihl fs90 which was a good machine but a bit puny for thicker stuff to an fs360 which has a lot more grunt for brambles, dock etc. its at the lower end of the stihl professional range but it does all i need it for which is similar to what you described in your OP.

I had an old pro Stihl and a much newer but smaller version (horrible it was too). Sold them both on ebay and bought a brand new Honda. Love it! Quiet, light, has a very comfy harness, starts easy and sips fuel AND no messing with two stroke ever.....

I might take a look at the Echo in the future as I'm a long time fan with my 10 year old Echo chain saw but for now the Honda suits all the jobs that I get to do with it and that includes brambles.
