International 885XL pressurising coolant!

Have you tried a new radiator cap ?

That was one of the first things entered my mind hoping for a handy solution but I ruled it out when I saw the bubbles rising out of the top of the radiator as if someone was blowing into a bottom hose. Does anyone know what the max coolant system pressure should be? I think I remember reading somewhere that the cap releases pressure at 7psi. Would that sound right?

Just a bit of an update for anyone interested. I pulled the cylinder head off today to investigate and on inspection of the mating surfaces and gasket there appears to be no problem or sign of compression leakage. There appears to be no cracks in the liners that are visible to the naked eye. I did not remove the injector sleeves as I am going to take the head to a local specialist on Monday for pressure testing. If the problem is with the head they will find it. I do now believe that the injector sleeves certainly could be the problem. A local supplier has them @ £23 each plus vat so shouldn't end up too expensive. That coupled with a new headset hopefully will see me back in the woods next weekend.

I experienced similar problems with my 885xl with two head gaskets, only to be informed to fit a new thermostat to ensure that the engine reaches the correct temperature. Having taken the professional advice the problem has been solved, no more overheating, I thought that without the thermostat, the engine would be cooler but there was no circulation. Maybe this info is too late for your problem.

I once had to repair a IH885 that had porous liners but in this case there was coolant getting into the sump but must have been pressurising the coolant when running. Like Fords which had a porous block problem with the head off and pistons out fill water jacket with a bit of anti freeze and boiling water from kettle; see the coolant seeping through the metal into the bore even though you cant see any flaw!

What was the final analysis? :thumbup1:

Yup be interesting to hear. I would've checked the thermosat first and flushed the radiator before taking the head off.

The injector sleeves will only leak water really if they aren't fitted. They are pressed in situ with a special tool and loctited and cant go anywhere if the injector is in place anyway.

O rings on the sleeves wouldn't pressurise just weep water into the sump.
