I managed to get hold of this the other week but I don't know foreign timbers at all

So can someone id this.the piece is about 3 ft long x8 ins wide and 6 ins thick and as heavy as hell

It looked more orange than before I planed a bit

that's not opepe which is what i thought it was from your description over he phone.

 

at first glance it looks like it will be one of the dipteocarpaceae family from Indonesia and the Philippines, most likely it is either one of the red balau species of which there are too many to pin it down to one or it's keruing.

 

 

if you can work out it's ft3 weight i might be narrow it down further.
