I am looking to set up a local tree growing scheme with community involvement.

So two questions.....

Firstly has anyone experience with the above?

Secondly, what book(s) would you recommend on the collection and propagation of British tree seed?

Ta in advance

once i was a volunteer tree warden for my local community, planting trees, tree surveys, etc. - it was funded as a national program by BTCV. i think it may not exist anymore, but check with BTCV and also Groundwork Trust.

Have a word with your local TO. Also ask him if there is a local tree warden that might be interested in helping.

For the seed info contact your local Wildlife Trust.

Do you only want seed propagation? With community involvement, other methods such as cuttings might well be worth including. If you have some dedicated propagation space it's also worth considering stooling for some species.

You don't get the genetic diversity with vegetative propagation but it can give good results. It's a bit more labour-intensive, but labour is something you shouldn't be short of.

Old-fashioned, but accurate, try Evelyn's Sylva on google books for propagation methods.

Thanks for all the info.

I am familiar with vegetative propagation so just mentioned seeds, which was silly really as it won't be just me doing it.

I will have a look at the books mentioned too.
