How to measure

I have a woodland to clear of dead standing and windblown scots pine.

I'm paying per m3 for the wood.

For my own ease I'm ringing it in the wood before taking it away in a MOG and large trailer. How do I measure it???

You won't like the answer

You can accurately measure each stem - length, and bottom diameter before you ring it and do one section at a time until your trailer is full.

The accurate way to do it needs a known volume tank filled - preferably to the brim with water- put the wood in and press it down until level with the top of the tank. remove the wood and measure the amount of water left in the tank - the difference between start and final volume of water is the volume of the wood.

More practically you can put a load over a weighbridge and convert the weight to volume - your problem is to establish a realistic standard density

Cheers

a circle with a 10cm diameter is 78.54 cm2, opposed to a square with a 10cm dimensions which is 100cm2, so on that basis, and assuming you stacked the rings nice and tight....if you worked out the cubic meterage of your trailer and charged for 78.54% of it you should be about on the money

That's a very fair way of doing things :thumbup1:

Ooh I like a little science project but I

Think I'll go for the weigh bridge.

Is a m3 a ton ?

Not exactly; all timbers have different weights per m3... Will get the figures from the book. Back tommorow :laugh1:
