New billhook

Have a word with Mendiplogs he has a couple up for grabs on Arbtrader. The older ones are made of better quality steel and can give a much finer edge when honed and sharpened. I was told that many years ago by a master hedger who never let anyone near his hook. It was razor sharp and kept an edge for many long hours hedging.

 

The two hooks I use all the time are sharpened to a razor edge. They'll wet shave you if you dare to try:001_smile: Elwell 2976 and old SJ Yorks.

 

They'll keep that edge virtually all day. Try using a modern Bulldog, Spear and Jackson etc and the difference is incredible even when you've spent hours getting the edge and bevel into some sort of shape.

Good hooks. The 9=9 inches and 10= 10 inches. This is a good reference to find the exact pattern Index of /images

I remember Wm. Gilpin on the A5 at Churchbridge, Cannock.

I had to call in there twice a week. Everything covered in carbon dust.

HI WOOD THE gilpin white house cannock is a nice no 9nice marks on the metal and i have a cornelils white house cannock and a mark of a hedge hog 2 blades on that one no 10 on it too thanks jon

Gilpin were originally at Wedges Mills near, what is now, the Roman Way hotel and Whitehouse were a little further up the A5 at Bridgetown.

 

Before setting up his edge tool forge Whitehouse worked for both Elwell and Gilpin.

Gilpin hook should have two crossed axes on it. From a time when English edge tools were the finest in the world.
