This is exactly why I don't do anywhere near as much work as I used to.

Only work for regular customers now and don't even bother with recommendations as they bound to be getting other quotes.

How does college/Uni make a more legit tree surgeon? Personally, I worked my way through on the tools, as did/do many others. A con is a con whichever route he chooses to exploit his victims, and the clever conmen are educated to a high standard, even degree level. It's this education that "qualifies" them to con people to a higher standard.

as ANDY says, some folks just rip people off, because they can ,, and customers don't know any better until its too late

 

whether the industry can deter cowboys I seriously doubt not when customers keep employing them , cash & price is often king,

 

qualifications, abilities , experience & quality of work are irrelevant as sadly these bring expense which is for some people too much to pay,

 

Education of what is good practice to the client and the risks associated of not employing good trades people would be the key.

 

but that is not likely to ever effectively happen especially in austerity britain
