Cs32??

Is CS32 a fell medium/large tree only course?? or does it include the windblow and processing the tree i,e limbing etc.

CS32 seems a obvious procession from 30/31..........but at £450-£500 for the course it's quite steep whereas porceeding to 38-39 and be able to fell a sectioned/removed crown tree with that qualification seems the way to go maybe????

Definitely the way to go if you want to get into climbing work. If you want to keep your feet on the ground then maybe go for the felling over 380mm qualification. Windblown trees is separate qualification, not included with felling. Have a look at NPTC website for details of current qualifications.

Some dangerous 'interpretations' really!

The key is to look at things as written and not try to interpret thing to suit making it cheaper to do what you want.

Will use 'old units' because that's what people still seem to relate to.

If you have 30/31/38/39 you can maintain a saw, cross cut timber, fell trees up to 380mm, climb a tree/perform areal rescue and use a chainsaw from rope and harness with freefall or hand released cuts.

There is no mention of either trees over 380mm or rigging (lowering while climbing) or anything to do with windblow.

So to fell a tree over 380mm, lower any timber from a tree or work on windblow you must hold the relevant additional certificates!

IMO way too many people going round with 30/31/38/39 working outside their competency/level of proficiency.

Spot on id say, i spoke to a very experienced trainer last week saying its becoming more common with faults/ accidents/ deaths from people felling stems over 380 mm with not the relevent qualifications and hse have come down hard on them. just because you know how to doesnt mean your qualified to do so, plus your insurance is most likely void !!

Cs32 is now called 302 and at the moment you get 1.5times and 2times guide bar felling soon it will only be medium trees at 1.5 times guide bar as large trees ie 2x guide bar is going to be a separate course again as far as the win blow goes it's now called 302 and combines single and multiple wind blow along with storm damaged felling ie standing stems I run courses all the time no issue on sites etc

If you section down & just fell the stem there is no need for larger than 380mm qualification. Only required if you will be felling whole tree in one without removing crown.

Not quite right you should really have either assisted fell or felling of standing of standing stems but again a stem over 380mm would require 302 (cs32)

Assisted fell may be required if using a rope or winch, assessment requires candidate to demonstrate:

•1 rope – tree up to 380mm

•1 winch/machine– tree over 380mm

302 (CS32) Felling & processing trees over 380mm

Depends, in the context of felling qualifications, whether a stem with no branches is still a tree?

To turn it around, if you have been assessed felling a stem with no branches would this qualify you to fell a tree with a full crown?

CS44 Fell standing stems - Yes:thumbup:, introduced in recognition that CS32 was not appropriate or necessary to fell a stem. CS44 no longer available & has no current equivalent, possibly because so few people took the assessment. How many people do you know who have CS44 or how often do you it see stated as a requirement in a job advert?
