A good friend who is a personal trainer/sports coach/diet boffin reckoned I should be getting 5000 calories a day to maintain healthiness. Protein is the major thing my diet was lacking in though, especially in the morning.

Seems to work pretty well for me, I'm a little under 6ft and 70kg.

Mmm might try a whey protein isolate shake with my breakfast, I'm 5'9 and 65kg on a good day.

I would be pretty confident to say that's an over estimation. 5000 kcal that's strongman style!

Chances are, you knackered at the weekend, because your body isn't getting enough protein to repair itself.

On a crap food diet, (crisps, chocolate bars etc) your body will burn these of like nothing, leaving you short of carbs to continue working, you're body will then start breaking down fats and protein to fill the void.

By the sounds of it, you're body doesn't store too much fat (going on height/weight) so that just leaves protein. Protein in a good diet, is used to rebuild tissue damage and generally regenerate the body, if too little is consumed the body gets tired and needs to rest in order to recover. This will be the tiredness at the weekend kicking in.

Calories in the form of carbs, should always be complex carbs, which release over a long period. Sugars etc, just give a sugar rush, and burns off very quickly, leaving the body tired again, with the carbs burning slower though, the body doesn't get to the stage that it runs out of fuel, especially if that fuel is replenished regularly.

The most important thing to realise, is that 3 meals a day, isn't actually that great. With the same intake, spread over 5 meals, your body will use it far more efficiently.

Thanks for that!! I'm understanding that my body needs more protein and good fats? More steak needed :-))

Who actually decided what the average calories per man / woman a day should be ? Just wondered . If climbing I have less calories . Grounding I have more .

Someone with far too much time on their hands! It was said on this thread somewhere that if you feel ok you're getting enough. I agree I've just not hit that sweet spot yet :-)
