Hi,

I have just booked myself on the Arboriculture and Bats: a Guide for Practitioners with the Bat Conservation Trust. I am very keen to move into an area of conservation like this. I am interested in getting involved with surveys and habitat creation/management etc of endangered species, anyone in this field who can give us some pointers? Thanks Steve

Ps good article in Essential Arb Mag!

I found this course to be a fascinating opener to the association between Bats & Trees.

But then I was fortunate to have Andrew Cowan (Batiarb) fascilitating it at Burnham Beeches :thumbup1:

I have however heard from others, that their experience was not as positive.

Are you in Wales Steve?

if you want to get more into it, contact your local wildlife trust who will be able to point you in the direction of your local bat group, who will normally carry out cheap training helping you to gain your bat license and will give you lots of opportunities to see bats in the natural habitats and carry out different survey techniques, you may well find they are keen to have someone who is happy to climb trees etc in the group, normally its not expensive but you will have to put some volunteer time in!

EDIT: or contact the people Monkeyd has just found whilst i was posting :001_rolleyes:

As an arborist/tree surgeon it seems that its becoming more important to have an understanding of tree related flora and fauna and any legislation tied in with protected species.

I took the advice given on this forum and contacted my local wildlife trust who were really keen to get me on board and involved in some local bat surveys. Due to go out and observe some survey work this week.

At the end of May ive got a 2 day bat survey course (which is free :001_cool:) to attend. The only condition seems to be that you complete at least 3 surveys (You can do more if you wish).

As iam self employed this could be another string to my bow. Is there much work out there with ecological consultants doing bat surveys etc?
