Construction tax rate. Info needed

Inoff, what's your link with the Arb world? Your advice on tax is always on topic and interesting and you certainly don't appear to be a spam bot. What gives?

 

OK doobin, I'll fess up.

 

My interest in the arb world is one of general interest really. As a hobby I do a bit of woodworking so always looking for timber. I was given a load of logs by a client who had cleared a building site and I chanced across the arb site while researching ways of diy milling.

 

By profession I am bean counter so it is my misfortune to have to deal with HMRC on a regular basis on CIS/VAT/PAYE/Corporation tax matters. I can't tell anyone how to cut down trees but I know how HMRC operate. I know how they bully and abuse small businesses (they do cosy deals with the big boys) and so if see something on a thread where I think I can make a positive contribution, I put my two penneth in.

All of these people complaining about it is good for the companies who don't mind factoring it in... Most companies I work for deduct 20% . Even though some of the work is possibly exempt, they cant be bothered to mess about where one job is and one is not.. End of the day my competitor who is not willing to run with the scheme will not get the work leaving less competition for me, so my price can be higher to factor in the 20%.. End of the year get a nice little rebate as has been mentioned...

You could debate whether its fair or not all day, Life is not fair and HMRC certainly aren't No one at HMRC will debate it with you and there the side that counts.

 

Go gross contractor think you need to turn more that 30k for it, its a headache and I hate HMRC who originally refused it to me on the basis I was late paying a 12£ tax bill 5 years ago. TWITS!

But now I just give my UTR code and get the full whammy

It all comes off your tax bill at the end of the year so no big deal really, I just think of it as an extension of my tax savings.
