Is it acceptable to chog down a bowl off a ladder with a stop around the tree?

I would say not, just do it from your spikes like every one els. If a pice you knocked off tock out the bottom of the ladders and fell away from you it's not going to be nice.

I'd agree with monkey. Spikes on! Surely you want the security that the spikes bring and not the added nause that something could go wrong with the ladder?

Are you asking for advice or seeking justification to continue what you are doing?

 

Generally speaking a ladder is fine for access but leaves a lot to be desired as a working platform.

 

To improve it you would need to stabilise the ladder (tie it in or have someone foot it) to prevent it sliding out from under you. Makes it all a bit cumbersome but it is doable.

 

The risk is the ladder slipping your strop gripping and you doing a face plant onto whatever is in front of you, be it the tree or your saw in the tree.

 

Those are the risks, use a ladder if you want, I have done in the past and would do it again but only if it were a better option than spikes

Ladders are for access at best they are DEFO not a working platform ! My opinion ... And close to hse' s aldo

Fair enough, someone said it was a bit of a gypo thing, and I wanted to put it to arb talk. I quite like using them and feel they can be a sturdy alternative as long as they are used with caution.

don't even like using ladders for access!

only use them for hedge cutting.

spikes for logging down, plus surely u have many up and down trips to keep adjusting height of ladders as you log down? seems a ballache!
