I have a strop around it though? Think about it

 

Are you asking for advice or seeking justification to continue what you are doing?

 

Generally speaking a ladder is fine for access but leaves a lot to be desired as a working platform.

 

To improve it you would need to stabilise the ladder (tie it in or have someone foot it) to prevent it sliding out from under you. Makes it all a bit cumbersome but it is doable.

 

The risk is the ladder slipping your strop gripping and you doing a face plant onto whatever is in front of you, be it the tree or your saw in the tree.:thumbdown:

 

Those are the risks, use a ladder if you want, I have done in the past and would do it again but only if it were a better option than spikes
