Ford Ranger problem

Haha the old late 2006/2007 cough and cut out rears it's ugly head again!!!

Now fuel filters are all well and good chaps but I'd bet my house on it being ...............

Fuel pressure sensor in the common rail...........

Why should I know this gem of info.??!

It took me and a local specialist about 6 months and many trips to the garage to work it out.

I when through the whole fuel system..

It's a tiny part. If you phone CCMS Diesel in Edinburgh he will explain better than me.

Sadly the repair could set you back around £500....

You can still drive your motor and the problem will semi clear itself meaning you just need to flick the ignition on and off and the engine will re start on the go... To start off with it was a trundle to the lay by followed by a lot of turning the engine over before it starts....but it does clear somewhat..

If your garage hasn't seen this exact problem you will need to educate them..

It could be that. But given that the same symptoms apply to a blocked filter, then he should spend a tenner and ten minutes before worrying about anything else.

Even if it was changed in September, it only needs a lump of crap to make it's way through from the bottom of the tank where it had been lurking (or even in a garage tank!) to clog the new filter enough to trigger the limp home mode.

Had the truck taken to Jennings Ford dealership this morning and they rang this afternoon to say the fuel filter housing itself is faulty. There is a diaphragm inside it and they reckon that it is damaged and sucking in air. They apparently have bypassed it and taken it out for a test and it ran fine. Undid the bypass, went out and engine shut down after a short distance.

£225 plus vat, got him down to £202 plus vat - that includes parts and labour.

Should be ready tomorrow as they had to order the part in. Fingers crossed.

Just as a follow on to this, I was talking to a mechanic on Monday and mentioned the diaphragm had split. "The old Mondeo problem," he replied! If the primer is on top of the fuel filter housing as it is on the Ranger and Mondeo he recommends you take off one of the fuel pipes when priming otherwise so much effort is required to pump the primer that the diaphragm splits inside!
