Which edible fungi

well I have just had my first cep, the bunny bun or for the latin loving scientific community boletus edulis, and it was, most excelant dude.

 

Save the field mushroom till your well cute on fungi foraying, it can be mis identified and confused with aminita phaloides, the death cap, and you really dont wanna eat that!

 

stick with the easiest to identify, chicken of the woods, the field and wood parasols, the boletes can be a little tricky to get used to identifying so bit advanced for a noddy.

 

and dont forget that the hericiums and many if not ALL toothed fungi are red data species and should be left alone due to thier rarity.

I was going to start a thread with pics of edible fungi but since I wouldnt being contributing since I aint that clued up would you two?

 

I only ask because I know they can be fatal if wrongly identified and maybe you wouldnt want to post pics.

 

Hopefully I'm wrong though.:thumbup:

 

Actually if you think its a good/feasible idea maybe you could start a thread?

This is a tricky area mesterh, one MOST steer clear of for obvious reasons, ive just started to consume my finds in order to be able to personaly garauntee things that people ask me, to be honest i still feel a bit iffy about eating them, for two reasons, one I like to leave them in situ and two, if i balls it up, im iether tripping my nuts off or very ill, or worse!

 

one things certain though, it really does make you focus hard on ALL identifying features!

Take this week for example, i found a group of forming giant puff balls, very edible in the forming egg stage, i left them in situ (rd side) to let them develope and sporalate, only to go back today and find somone had taken them for the pot!

 

its fustrating, but understandable, luckily they missed all the parasols!

I always think it great when you can do a bit of foraging, and this year seems to plentiful of fruit, berries and fungi!

 

 

Maybe a pic of a fungi you have eaten 2 days previously would be ok.:laugh1:

well it appears i got the boletus edulis right, as i am fine and dandy! i have to say, having had freshly foraged a highly desirable porcini I could get a little too into the foraging lark! and i do have rather a lot of oportunity too!

 

Ive always wanted to camp in the highlands and live off venison, wild berries and fungi for a while, go all ray mears for a month or so!

They love a bit of armilaria in spain, but i think some folk get stomach upsets from them?

 

though this is probably an individual thing.

 

Some people seem to have the same problems with monosodium glutamate which is broken down in the body to similar compounds found in fungi?
