This is how I knew about the pipemaking but it's so long ago that I was there I remember nothing except the name.

As I come across a fair bit of dog rose, in similar sizes to mentioned above I had a look into that.

 

The wood used for pipe-bowls is "briarwood" the roots from a tree heather "Erica arborea" which has nothing at all to do with dog rose.

Which is confusing enough as the word "briar" is used for dog rose, bramble and apparently also for the genus "smilax" (which I've never heard of).

 

Which leads us back to the starting point where it seems there is no use for the wood of the dog rose?

I've used it to make sticks as it's quite light yet fairly strong and remains somewhat springy, but no other uses that I've heard of:confused1:

well thinking about it i am looking if i can get some more bits making a chair.

or making them in to salt and pepper pots. will not let them go to waste just leave them in shed to dry out. got half a dozen bits for walking sticks.

soon as they have dried two will be made to give to customer i am doing hedge for.
