He means the electrode parts where the spark jumps across should be a sorta tan color to indicate it is fueling correctly . Sooty black its too rich grey white its too lean .

What do you mean by "four stroking at top end"? Got a couple of 365's and fancy giving one a bit of muffler mod treatment!

When you set the H screw on a chainsaw, you are actually using the carb as a rev limiter.

 

It works by semi flooding the spark ignition when the saw is flat out and on every other stroke so the saw doesn't fire on each second stroke but does it every fourth stroke hence the term.

 

This phenomenon keeps the saw from over revving and seizing. Many modern saws also have limited coils doing a similar thing but the carb still needs setting the same way!

Roughly what kind of percentage increase would you expect in power for a 365 with exhaust mod, is it worthwhile doing?

 

Also got a 550xpg on way, once warranty is out would it be worth doing it also and how would the auto tune react to a mod?

 

Appreciate you taking time for all these questions, I have mate down in Hereford next time I'm down that way I'll pop in a bottle of whisky!

Just my 2 peneth on the 550 . I think they are a different design internally than 3 series saws not leaving a huge scope for porting work as they are pretty efficient as standard . There are gains to be had in the muffler mod department . My 560 has had the exhaust can cut and shut ( cut open , a strategic amount of baffle removed and welded back up ) . Its a loony on an 18" bar driven by an 8 pin .

Appreciate the input on 550 Stubby. I've asked for it to be 3/8 13" with 8 drive sprocket (just for snedding softwood) so will see how it gets on with that configuration.

 

Incidentally, I had a look at one of 365's today with view to take out spark screen but didn't see any wee brass screws on exhaust. If similar design exhaust to what you mentioned in another post then I assume I'll need to take exhaust off to remove screen?

 

What I think I might do with 365 is enlarge exhaust port by 50% and see if can drill out the baffles. If this works and happy with overall effect then I'll braze a pipe in to tidy it up.
