Elm planks

I did mention these in another thread, but today i went to the wood yard(woodlines, Grantham) to get an 8 x 4 sheet of ply, & took one of these planks i got recently with me to see if they could tell me what it is. They said it was elm.

So, some questions if i may gents. Are elm planks(if indeed his identification is correct) common ?, & are they worth anything ?, i have a dozen, & they measure approx, 1500 mm long x 295 mm wide x 17mm thick, & are over 12yrs old, the age, is known by how long the current occupiers of the house who's loft i cleared had been there, ie the planks were there when they moved in 12yrs ago.

All guess's welcome, i can't do technowizardry pic posting but could send pics to mobiles

Regards,

Rob

elm is not particularly rare (rarer than it used to be but still readilly available) and only worth £25 perft3 for thin boards like yours. they equate to just over 3 1/2 ft3 which means they are worth about £90-£100 for all 12.

if there is any worm or other defects in them then slash that price in half.

hope this helps

Elm has become somewhat rarer - the sawmill near me is paying £8/Hoppus ft for decent sawlogs which is double that on oak. This won't translate into double the price on the dry timber, but it is definitely going up.

edit: coincidentally my new avatar is some elm boards I milled yesterday but the picture really doesn't do the colour justice - I'll stick some proper pictures up later.
