Saw Fuel and Oil Running costs.

A lot depends on what sort of work you are doing but purchase cost is something like,

Pump fuel 5ltr £7.20+ about £1 for 2t oil depending on brand/quality so about £8-9 where aspen is £13-15 depending on quantity but no running back and forth to petrol station, time mixing, risk of stail/low quality fuel damaging saws.

Some weeks I can do all week on only 10 ltrs and hundreds of pounds worth of work but if ringing up with the 088/3120 I can do 20ltrs in a day so the difference adds up.

Chain oil, bio is about 50% more than mineral unless like some you get it from cash and carry/supermarket at about £1 ltr but again quantity can affect costs.

For forestry it would be harder to build the extra cost into the job, arb not so hard and to some customers the environmental benefits come across as a plus to using you + the health benefits to you as a saw opperater.

Check out the one reason I use aspen thred for more on this.

Aspen from the dealer is now more like £18 if you're just buying 5l.

For context, yesterday's milling (oak tapering from 4' to 3' x 20' long, taken into a mix of 2", 2.5" and a couple of 3") was done on about 15l of fuel in the end. The idifference between Aspen and pump fuel would have been about £30, but with no risk of damaging big saws from dodgy pump fuel, and I don't have a bad headache or feel ill the day after.

Haven't done any milling with aspen yet but have noticed a big difference to how I feel after a day's hedge cutting, no more feeling like I've got a hangover when I get home.

I tend to get 50 ltrs at a time which gets a bit of discount and has the benefits of having a stock when needed.
