064 woes

It pulls over fine with those variables Alec.I even tried using the coil for my 046 which should be compatible.Ht lead was too short.

The saw has made in west Germany on the side, which must mean its an 80`s saw.The coils on ebay are mostly after 1990.Need to be sure i`m ordering a compatible coil, but the one i have has no id marks.

As a matter of interest what part number do you have on the flywheels you are using?

 

I haven't got the relevant info where I am at the moment but can look it up once home Friday onwards - the coil part number will also be needed.

I had an 036 exactly the same intermittently. I tried changing the flywheel and coil for one off another saw which was known to be good and it was still the same. Once it started it ran fine. Never did get to the bottom of it! I put an elastostart handle on it which took the worst of the shock out of it and its still going well today.

Cheers spud, i`ll have a look for the flywheel numbers tomorrow, but the coil has no markings on it at all.

When the flywheel was off was there a generator winding being behind it? Early ones had it later ones didn't.

Early flywheel should be 1122 400 1207

Later flywheel should be 1122 400 1203

Well, both flywheels have part number 1122 400 1204.However, the newer unit has an additional part number 1122 400 1203, and has a 2 next to it and an upside down cup.The first number has 1 and the cup.

I`m presuming these must be for the two keyways and indicate different coils.

I have the details of coil and flywheel pairing for this saw buy not with me, will advise once home on Friday.

 

The coil having no marking makes me suspect it is an aftermarket one. This nay have fixed ignition timing and may be causing issues.

 

The 064 has a fixed advance coil as standard making them a bit interesting to pull over. It may be better to fit the later one that has the variable advance.

Theres no winding behind the flywheel, but i thought these were for heated handles.Hopefully i can get a part number off spud to match the flywheel which has the lower number you`ve given.Cheers.

Right - back home now and from the IPL, I can see that part 1122 400 1203 is the correct part, the part 1122 400 1207 is the part for heaated handles and will have a circular magnet on the back of it. You are correct about the winding being for the heated handles.

 

There are quite a number of coils listed: -

 

1122 400 1300 (must be used with 1122 400 1201/1206 flywheel)

 

1122 400 1303 - From Part number X 18 761 250

1122 400 1311 - From Part Number X 31 067 164

0000 400 1300 - From part Number X 31 067 164

The latter three part numbers are to be used with 1122 400 1203/1207 flywheels)

 

I think your coil may be aftermarket and has no retardation on low revs at start up - this is what gives many old saws a real kick on starting as the engine fires on the upward stroke ripping the starter out of your hand - the ignition was set at around 19 degrees advance with no electronic retard!

 

Try to get hold of the 0000 400 1300 ignition module and try that. One simple thing to try is to increase the distance of the coil to flywheel to say "double business card", check the saw still sparks and try that, it will have the same effect as retarding the ignition but may cause lack of spark issues!
