VW Crafter opinions.

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of getting a crew cab VW Crafter tipper and having a ally box built on it.

 

Any opinions?

 

Also has anyone taken out the rear seat of a crew cab and mdf'ed it up to make a tool box? I think it would be great to have central locked tool storage! Any pics of this would be really helpful.

It's built in the same factory as the Merc Sprinter to my knowledge. And they're solid vans.

Talking to a lorry mechanic the other day, ambulance service bought 50 spinters and load of 'same' crafters. All the crafters are rubbish and they are pulling the bodies off to put on sprinters! They are NOT the same anymore.

According to the guys who service my transporter van, they aren't so good with the fuel filters blocking and engines could be problematic...

if i was going for a truck the sprinter or a vito do not know if they do them without a body on back

Seems to be a LOT of grumbling about the diesel particulate filters on t'internet. Seems that they clog up and you need to drive at a 2000+rpm for 20 miles to clear them. It's being reported that a lot of them don't clear and you end up in 'limp mode' until they're 'forced' to regenerate by someone who can access the engine management.

 

You can get them removed and have the engine management changed to ignore that they're not there any more, but it costs a few hundred quid. Not sure what that'd do to anyone in the London LEZ but I can't see it being good! A new DPF is big money - £1k+ at least.

 

Shame really, they look like the quality option and there seems to be quite a few three-ish year old ex-Asda delivery vans around for about £5K.
