Trees/shrubs with Spring and Summer interest

Currently doing an assignment at college in which I have to write about 25 trees or shrubs that have Spring or Summer interest. The interest can be the flowers/fruit or anything else as long as it appears during these seasons. So far I've included a few cherries(flowers), horse chesnut (flowers), Blackthorn (flowers) but am starting to run thin on ideas. Anything Prunus would be the obvious choice however I want to vary my selection if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly received.

Just an idea, why not visit your local parks, arboretum, and so on, and see what really catches your eye. We can all spout lists of plants, but put your heart and soul into it. Things like this will stick in your mind long after completing a project, and will influence your mind when selecting plants when working.

i find bark and leaves interesting. more interesting than fruit and flowers... trees are generally pretty interesting things all year round.

 

i would say your assignment is purely subjective, and mostly BS:001_tongue: you should protest them wasting your time, make them teach you more stuff and ask you less silly questions:thumbup:

I'm heading down to my local Arboretum at the weekend to see whats about. I just thought I'd ask on here also because of the vast amount of knowledge that is about. I had to do a autumn winter project just before christmas and I found the arboretum very useful, but if I can get any suggestions it would definitely speed up the whole assignment.

Believe me I wish we could spend more time learning the practical stuff than doing assignments like this.

I remember that assignment well!

Paulownia tomentosa has utterly gob-smacking blue/purple flowers any time soon, massive leaves- about 1" across!

Magnolia's an obvious one, good time to get some photo's.

Forythia's another looking gorgeous right now. Hope that gets you started, but I'd do as Andy says, take a walk round the streets and have a look in peoples gardens. Great for inspiration.

Ash always wins in my book as they swell to huge sizes just before the leaves emerge. IAlso, I was inspecting a huge Syc yesterday and the newly emerging shoots looked amazing as they are pink before the light hits them.

 

What about the sticky factor

 

Horse Chestnut and Balsam Pops to name 2. Squeeze a balsam bud and see how it gets it's name.
