Making chip for woodchip boiler

As you would have the space and the chance to offer a free tip to local tree surgeons why not invest in a drying system rather than worry about destroying the woodland. You may end up in a position to sell surplus dried chip to re coup some of the investment. Just thoughts.

You could work out exactly whether it would be cheaper to chip your own wood, or buy in ready made chip.

If you contact a fuel supplier with your size of fuel store, chip specification, site accessibility. they could tell you exactly what a tonne would cost.

If you have hard wood, you would definitely be better off selling as fire wood (logs) and buying in softwood in the round to chip and fuel your boiler.

to get a sensible moisture content (Usually around 30%) you are more than likely going to need to season wood for approx 12 months. (depending on species and stack conditions)

consistency of chip size can be hard to achieve with smaller chippers as well.

It don't make sense to cut down 20 acres of woodland to feed a boiler, I would look for other sources there's plenty around if you do some research. As previously stated I would consider contacting local tree surgeons to see if they would be willing to give you for free. Storage and fire, unlikely with a bit of care
