We've fattened 4 pigs this year it's been ace.

They've got about two weeks left before they meet the butcher

Really rewarding both financially and spiritually.

You wouldn't believe how many nephews and nieces didn't know where pork, bacon, sausages etc came from.

One of them, an eight year old was genuinely upset. He couldn't understand why we couldn't buy our meat from the supermarket like everyone else !

Despite my best efforts to explain quality of life, etc he's adamant that he's not eating meat at the BBQ we're planning after they return in kit form from the butcher.

All my daughter is interested in is what flavour the spare ribs are going to be !!!

She keeps giving them a squeeze to make sure they're not too fatty

thinking of doing this next year, just 2 as we haven't got space for any more freezers. How did the costings work out with 4 of them, purchase price and feed costs.

Not that cheap this time as we've had to buy everything, fencing, feeders, accommodation etc.

we've had about £50 worth of food per pig but we've fed loads and loads of free food, veg, fruit, waste bread etc.

a mate of mine who knows pigs has told me 5kg's of free food = 1 kg of pig pellets.

Butchery costs are quite high

£20 per pig for killing

£50 per pig for butchering but this does include making hams, sausages, and some bacon joints

Well worth it in my opinion.

We'll get the next lot next March.
