What height can you get through, ie do you need to take it just off the sides to squeeze it through the throat, or do you need to take the top down too?

Poplar has fairly fat bark so if you've got a couple of inches of bark to remove, then an inch or so of wood at the fattest bit, I would use an axe. If you can get it under the head, the other option would be to put the 'side' up first, skim that off by a few inches, then roll it up (or flip it right over first if you need some off both sides).

I was weighing that up today. I think it could be a good few inches higher than wider and as you say trim 4 or 5 " off the top. I am thinking chainsaw two sides so it squeezes through. I have had too much generator work in the last year to do the mill justice but now I have started need to make sure I dont get distracted and engrossed its a bit addictive. Its only pop but when you go in doors it shows up all the melamine and formica

It's worth keeping an eye out as you mill for ripple or burr. This can be much more worth milling for boards than for kindling. There have been a couple of threads with pictures:

Never really thought of pop as being of any value for milling will keep an eye out if I can recognise it.

Yep I should have kept loads more of that poplar - sold that rippled plank for £150-00 in the end...

It takes a while to get an eye for it - something I'm still developing...

Looks like you may get some stock in about 10 hours. If i get offered nice stuff I will let you know.
