As far as i know the minimum requirment for climbing karabiners is 22kn to achieve a CE rating, the same with rope i guess.

What Elderid biner did you buy?

Its 22kn. Its 5000 pounds in the states which is just under 22kn, so thats why they dont like some euro stuff!!

17kn was mentioned above, thats fine for prussike loops etc if tied in a loop method with both legs secured, single leg friction hitches (blakes and helical) should be tied with 22kn stuff although this generally is more than enough as only half your wight is on the hitch most of time.

There is no way that you start with the weight of climber and go ten times up from that. Whoever is arguing that should be shot!!

22kn mbs= 220 kgs swl. (one tenth) one climber is (easy maths) 100kgs so 22kn is plenty and also its plenty for rescue purposes as wel..

Nice karabiner, and perfectly suited for our work, it has a trilock and is 22kn anyone who thinks it is not fit for use is a moron,,,, no offence to your colleagues who i am sure are all decent chaps.

The only ting i can say about those Elderid biners is stock up on the graphite those gates are prone to sticking.

Nowt wrong with that.

Weigh the guy that says it should be 10 times the weight of the climber then see what gear you can buy that is that low in rating!!

I'm heavy-ish at max 90kgs, so I need gear with MBS 9kn? I don't think so.

Except american ones rated at 5000 pounds but then they wouldn't have a CE mark and most american stuff is way over 5000 pounds anyway (can't imagine why) so it only tends to be when they buy our gear that a problem can arise.

i'm one of his colleagues, and i was on the krabs side.

i'm sure it's double your weight, then ten times, that brings most non americans up to roughly the same rating (18-24Kn) but the other moron at work reckons that it's 24Kn of force irrespective.
