Forestry tape measure cut

Measuring up some timber on a site today, was on my third measure on stick and went to pull the tape clear and sliced my fingers up nicely on the edge of the tape. Was just a little tug and couldn't believe it happened. Instead of the hook on the end it has a type of caliper to grab the end which doesn't like letting go. Anyone else had this? it seems to catch on everything compared to the hook as well. Anyone encountered this?

No i didn't have gloves on as my hands have been getting a bit soft and have been trying to harden them up a bit.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Spider web who'd have thought, good idea to remember next time,Dartmoor,i normally wear gloves but have run out,i find if i wear the same ones to much they get bacteria in them and my hands start peeling away and get quite sore, has happened to me a few times when ive worn them in the wet a few days in a row!
