Contractors insurance ?

Short answers please, :001_smile: As contractors what insurances do you have to have in place to tender for works in the UK. BY LAW. I have always held the full Monty, but have recently found out that some of my LA competitors have none. !!!!! is this a case of underhanded dealings or have my own values over the years been misplaced.

All depends what companies your working for. but normally indemnity , but the right one for what your doing... Bigger amount for utilities

Thanks but you missed my main question , uk Law. Working, employment, advising . or PL, EL, PI. IS IT Law to have to have it in place. Not all of them, just whats relevant to what service you provide.

As far as I'm aware, the only insurance you must legally have in place (aside from vehicle etc) is employers liability; and only then if you employ someone, bona-fide sub-contractors (I think) are excluded. Is that brief (and accurate?!) enough? Best have plenty of savings if the bum mud hits the air mover though...

If you have employees or just workers of any description under your control, you must have ELI, by law.

Yes thanks I know that one, but its the others ? I just took it for granted over the years that by law you had to have them, PL, is the one I suppose i'm really digging at. To think i'v been tendering for LA over the years and the awarded company ,who has undercut my prices, has no insurances at all is really grating me a little.

How do you know they are not insured?

Up here the councils have a system in place that prevents them from raising a Purchase Order with out the contractors up to date insurance details, I always get a call each year asking for my new certs when they try to raise an order, but fail because the renewal date has passed.
