Thats only a perk if the staff are stupid enough not to be charging extra on their day rate to cover all the above

 

I agree Steve.

 

You know though as well as I do that there are more and more people coming into the industry. In South East London many firms will pay peanuts for staff on the terms I mentioned above. They will keep paying the peanuts because there is quite a queue for people looking to get into the industry. If the (self) employed person doesn't like it then someone else will do it for the same money or even less.

 

I am not saying I agree with it, I'm just saying, thats all.

I agree. Its up to the self employed guys to collectively do something about it. That will never happen though

Pretty sure it's not quite as simple as that, though I may be wrong.

 

It depends on who is giving the instructions on site. If you sub out an entire job to another team and you personally are not on site then they provide the insurance and make their own decisions (eg you and your team go to 123 Baker Street and take down the ash in the front garden, there's £500 ring me when it's done). However, If for example you bring a self employed climber/Groundie onto a job you are running then you do need employers insurance. What if you as the employer injure the self employed climber/Groundie, they will want to claim from somewhere and there personal insurance won't pay out for someone else's mistake.
