35! this is in the round still, not sawn.

so, lets see.

96" x 54 x 54 =279936 / 1728 =162 cubic feet @ 35 = £5670

think my maths are out somewhere here

any advances on my math :confused1:

must be the heat getting to me :001_smile:

I have been selling the kiln dried boards from a couple of cedar logs at a fairly steady rate at £24 a cubic foot.

I payed £60 a tonne for it in the round, roadside. That is about £2.20 a cubic foot. Your lump is more or less exactly 100 hoppus foot, so by that reckoning (assuming atlas cedar is as nice as deodar), I'd pay £220 for it.

thanks,

where did my maths go wrong?

and my man was after £5 a ft?

could it be our "southern prices" why he is looking for that, or some other variation?

Far too much. I'd expect to get middling grade Oak for that. Single logs are invariably worth less too due to increased haulage costs - my cedar was part of a 15t parcel with some nice sequoia.

Your maths was right, except you were working out for a 4.5ft square cant, not round.

should be

pi x r2 x h

so

3.14 x (27x27) x 96=219749 cu inches. divide by 1728 = 127 cu ft. so hoppus foot around 100 as bigj said. Still a ridulous price at 35 a cube.
