Licenses/tickets

Hi,

Was just hoping people would be able to clarify a few things. For undertaking tasks such as coppicing and using a chainsaw to remove limbs close to the ground (below shoulder height of course!) is a ticket/certificate of competence legally needed or recommended? Also for mewp training does the operators ticket allow for pruning with loppers or a silky.

Cheers, hope that makes some sense!!! :)

Depends if your charging for it. If your doing it for yourself then no not a legal requirement but would recommend it, again most hire companies wont ask for ipaf ticket with mewp but worth having one.

I would recommend it as you will be dealing with working outside bucket and felling near to bucket. MEWPS don't take a lot of tipping over especially if you drop a limb on them the dangers will be similar without the use of chainsaw.

Hmmm, whilst 'technically' this statement is correct, the relevant ACOP, which has a quasi-legal status, (under PUWER) states:

Chainsaw operators

191 All workers who use a chainsaw should be competent to do so. Before using a chainsaw to carry out work on or in a tree, a worker should have received appropriate training and obtained a relevant certificate of competence or national competence award, unless they are undergoing such training and are adequately supervised. However, in the agricultural sector, this requirement only applies to first-time users of a chainsaw.

Hence, to be on the safe side, and particularly in the professional sector, there is merit in interpreting this as law.

Cheers..

Paul
