Ash fell - Polyporus squamosus

Nice photos John - and nice to read you on here again. I ditched my f/book acccount last year so haven't been keeping up with your news.

I note on the other thread where you mention this tree you said it was being re-assessed to determine the level of decay...do you do this using a mallet and ear or something fancier?

I’ve been using a mattet a lot lately, especially on the Limes around Pitchcroft and I’m a firm believer and a true convert. On the Ash we used a particularly high tech item of stick – a piggy stick, no-less!

No place in a formal park for ecology?

Yes there is, just not this exact location. It's in one of the main formal areas of the park.

We've been asked in the past to go back and take down a monolith we've left as they weren't suitable.

I'm all for it!

I know this park well, and also the tree in question and have always had a quick peek as I've walked past it - shame to see it finally be taken down. Do you know what species you'll plant in it's place?

I think this park would benefit from some more 'informality' in terms of deadwood habitat. It's surprising how well the public perception can be, especially as one gradually starts managing parks for habitat - no one really starts to notice.

Cool - the tactile approach is hard to beat! Good on you for retaining the tree for as long as possible...

Hope to see you around our fine city some time...hopefully in a beer garden in this stonking weather:thumbup1:
