Hi,

 

Yep its daft, but not as daft as the 256Gb of HP ram I once received for a server, the primary box was so big it was on a small pallet.

The problem is if it had come in an envelope and it was damaged in transit you would have a different thread on here and the company would have to pay for the return of the broken part and then ship out another.

 

So the cost of returns and shipping way out ways the cost of extra packing.

Sorry more aimed at the chip. But hardened steel can still break. If it was in an envelope and got bent it could snap it. Bu the huge box is a little over the top. A shoebox would have been better or a FedEx slim box.

I have a sneaking suspicion it is so things don't get lost. An envelope may "disappear" somewhere, you would struggle to smuggle a great big box anywhere. :D

The component was in its own little box inside foam, the little box was really tough, it could have been sent in that alone, you'd have had to stamp on it to damage it
