Picked up an old fransgard a little while ago that had a problem pulling in heavy loads.

having stripped it apart the two friction plates (sprocket and winch drum) are just metal on metal, should there be some sort of friction material in there?

Also does anyone have any guidance on how to adjust/set up the clutch?

Thanks

Hi Dave have a 3ton fransguard winch will have a look at mine on tuesday as cant remember ...off the top of my head i think theres a threaded bolt which is located on the metal plate round the drum which you adjust to increase or decrease the tension. will look tuesday though if no one comes up with the answer.

I had the same problem with mine. However as mine is the winch with no name (possibly chiefton forge), the solution is probably different.

The problem with mine was the friction pads had worn. The bearings that seperated the two moving parts were now acting as a spacer, and the cable drum was not in propper contact with the friction plates.

From your discription i would say that a similar thing is happening to yours.

Happy tinkering.

Thanks for the replies, the winch has a threaded bolt on the back that is used to adjust the tension on the back of the drum, just wondering how much/little movement there should be on the clutch arm.

Sounds like we have had similar problems with both of our winches, just trying to establish if there should be any friction material on the sprocket or if it really is just metal to metal

Knowing absolutly nothing about forestry winches.

But there HAS to be some sort of lining.

It used to be possible to get commercial brake shoes relined.

I presume the service is still needed for all the older/vintage stuff still.

Would this work?
