Smoking diff...?

I am sure they will limp around for a few months with a tea cup full of oil rather than the 2.8 litres they should have. But wont be alot of good. I change my 4x4 diffs 25k or everytime they have been under water. My BMW transmission oils have just been done at 145k but they are supposed to be sealed for life. Oil =£10 new diff = £1800 bit of a no brainer really. If your pinion seal is leaking keep a close eye on the level.

Cheers Lads,

I've emailed the mobile mechanic tonight.

Regards

Ty , im not sure i can explain this without an open diff case, but if the pinion bearings are out of adjustment the pressures between the gear teeth go through the roof and the teeth, instead of rolling against each other rub as they go round. Might just need setting up properly or a new set of bearings, or if you leave it much longer .....££££

Now I do recall, the truck, a 2007 ex leasing we bought last Sept had already a recent diff change.

It is still under warranty...perhaps.

I'll ask my man about adjustment of pinions.

The smell has been slowly getting worse.

There has been a light smell for weeks once hot.

Regards
