They certainly do look like old pollards, owing to the fact that you cn clearly see new younger stems growing out from the older.

 

Are they all in a row? I think it's a safe bet to assume they've all been pollared at some point in the past. Interesting how the tree in your first picture almost looks to have ripped itself apart, could it be that they were pollarded and the new growth snapped out, causing the damage and then the growth you are seeing now is third-generation?

Sorry if i implied that people dont know wot a pollard is.I meant to typemore after that saying im not sure why they've split :blushing:. They are in a row about 500 metres long but only these 3 have split open and the other pollards seem alot taller. They do look bloody marvellous though:001_tt1:
