Localised distribution of Fomes fomentarius

Number 8's gone for a burton, can't say I'm suprised

not really localised, as this is from Burgundy region. and looks to be on dead ash.

number 10 from today, to add to the distribution map of Fomes on the site.

 

This one found on a dead section having fallen off an oak within open access woodland.

Seems a fairly even spread. I wonder how far it extends?

Its spread across a relatively narrow geographical strip.

 

There are a couple of specimens a little further north than these (on oaks at a neighboring site) that I'm aware of but I haven't picked up on any others going north from here within London. Due south is toward the city center so that's perhaps unlikely to host many/if any Fomes.

 

Conjecture, but these may be the deepest 'found' ones within London from the northern perspective.

..............Great thing (for me) about threads like these, is that over years they can be updated with any new data/findings I come across.

like this interesting paper by Baum, Sieber, Schwarze and Fink which suggests (presumed by the authors) that F. fomentarius may be an Endophytic species as well as (or perhaps instead of) being a sapwood exposed colonisation strategist.

No problem at all. Will read through that and the Sparassis crispa article Jules posted on the fact thread, and do a write up for my blog if I can wrap my head around it all properly.

Still only seen Fomes once outside of Scotland.
